Attribution of late summer early autumn Arctic sea ice decline in recent decades

چکیده

Abstract The underlying mechanisms for Arctic sea ice decline can be categories as those directly related to changes in atmospheric circulations (often referred dynamic mechanisms) and the rest (broadly characterized thermodynamic processes). An attribution analysis based on self-organizing maps (SOM) method is performed determine relative contributions from these two types of August–October during 1979–2016. daily represented by 500-hPa geopotential height anomalies are classified into 12 SOM patterns, which portray spatial structures Oscillation Dipole, their transitions. Due counterbalance between opposite trends among circulation net effect small, explaining only 1.6% declining trend number days majority (95.8%) accounted processes not circulations, whereas remaining (2.6%) non-circulation cannot distinguished. closely associated with surface air temperature increase, increasing water vapor content, downward longwave radiation, temperatures over open ocean, well decreasing albedo. analogous extending seasonal coverage spring (April–October) same period supports dominating role forcing decadal-scale loss.

The Recent Decline of the Arctic Summer Sea-Ice Cover in the Context of Internal Climate Variability

By means of a 21-year simulation of a coupled regional pan-Arctic atmosphere-ocean-ice model for the 1980s and 1990s and comparison of the model results with SSM/I satellite-derived sea-ice concentrations, the patterns of maximum amplitude of interannual variability of the Arctic summer sea-ice cover are revealed. They are shown to concentrate beyond an area enclosed by an isopleth of barotropi...

Arctic sea ice decline: Faster than forecast

[1] From 1953 to 2006, Arctic sea ice extent at the end of the melt season in September has declined sharply. All models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report (IPCC AR4) show declining Arctic ice cover over this period. However, depending on the time window for analysis, none or very few individual model simulations show trends comparable to obs...

Importance of autumn Arctic sea ice to northern winter snowfall.

In their contribution to PNAS, Liu et al. (1) suggested that the recent decline of Arctic sea ice has played a critical role in recent cold and snowy winters in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). This study is very interesting, but we believe it deserves several clarifications. First, in 2010, Wu et al. (2) discovered the importance of autumn Arctic sea ice in triggering regional cold extremes; for ...

Sea ice thickness and recent Arctic warming

The climatic impact of increased Arctic sea ice loss has received growing attention in the last years. However, little focus has been set on the role of sea ice thickness, although it strongly determines surface heat fluxes. Here ensembles of simulations using the EC-Earth atmospheric model (Integrated Forecast System) are performed and analyzed to quantify the atmospheric impacts of Arctic sea...

Recent wind driven high sea ice area export in the Fram Strait contributes to Arctic sea ice decline

Arctic sea ice area has been decreasing for the past two decades. Apart from melting, the southward drift through Fram Strait is the main ice loss mechanism. We present high resolution sea ice drift data across 79 N from 2004 to 2010. Ice drift has been derived from radar satellite data and corresponds well with variability in local geostrophic wind. The underlying East Greenland current contri...
